Family & Children F A QFAMILY & CHILDREN SESSION FAQ
Family Photography is all about creating a story of how your family is in this moment. Relationships change and evolve so fast and often that documenting the precious moments between family members is, in my mind, crucial.
What can I expect during my Family Session?
Together we will discuss and find a location that works best for the style of photos you want. I prefer to shoot outside during “Golden Hour”, which is 1.5 hours before sunset. This kind of light is soft and makes for beautiful photos of your family. Exceptions can always be made due to weather and young children who cannot stay up late. I have three small kids, I know how it goes. Please keep in mind if we do not have our session at Golden Hour it may not reflect my portfolio work as most of my sessions are held at that time.

How can I prepare my kids for our photo session?
Prepare children for your session by letting them know that a friend will be taking photos of them. It’s best not to surprise them.
Remember that children are not usually fond of being told to pose or smile. It is best if we just give kids (of any age, really) time to relax. I try to capture their natural selves as much as possible. Don’t worry if your child is running about and being active. These are the moments that we want to capture and remember. To get the family shots, I usually direct the adults to simply “be” with the child or hold the child and we go from there. Bring fruit snacks or other non-messy snacks as a distraction is a good idea too!
Make a fun experience of the photo session by doing something as a family before or after your session! (almost) Everyone likes ice cream! Go to a movie! Play in a park!
To get the most out of your session, make sure that your little one has rested and has had adequate snacks and water. We can take breaks for snacks and play, however, I will probably still shoot during the breaks. Bring dry, non-messy snacks so their faces stay clean during the session.
What kind of Child Photography do you offer?
Together we will determine the exact type of session you are wanting to capture. The following are my most popular children session requests:
Tummy Time Session- When your baby can lift their own head up. This is typically around 3-4 months of age.
Sitting Session- When your baby can sit unassisted. This is a great time to do a milk bath or fruit bath session.
1st Year Cake Smash- When your baby is a year old (or close to). This session is typically done at my home-studio with a small set up customized to your child. Let’s get creative and plan something unique!
Birthday Session- Document each birthday and watch your child grow! This session can vary widely depending on the age of your child and their likes and interests. I love these sessions because they allow me to get creative!
Graduating Senior- Your child all grown up (almost) and about to have one of the first huge, momentous experience. Finishing high school. While I know you are terrified (or maybe you are excited too!), this is definitely one of those moments that you will want to freeze in time. My senior sessions are unique to each person and feature who they are at this moment.
